Used oil that is poured down drains and improperly disposed used filters and containers contaminate ground water, rivers, and lakes. Not only does this pollution harm plants and wildlife, it also contaminates your drinking water.
By taking your used oil to a recycling facility, you are keeping it from harming our environment, and the oil can be refined and re-used!
Where to take used oil
There is a safe way to dispose of used oil, filter, and containers. There are many used oil collection depots nearby where you can drop off your waste. Some places will even pick it up for you!
What you need to know
To properly dispose of used oil products at a depot, follow these guidelines:
1. Collect the used oil from your vehicle, lawnmower, farm equipment or other machinery and place it in its original container.
2. Do not contaminate the oil with other liquids. Solvents, paint thinner, bleaches, antifreeze, gasoline, PCBs, household chemicals, insecticides, herbicides, pesticides, grease or water are not accepted.
3. Place the filters in a clean container.
4. Return your used oil materials to the nearest collection depot during operating hours. Most importantly, please tell others about the important service offered by these facilities!

Refining used oil can completely restore it's lubricating properties so that it can be used again.

Recycled oil is also used extensively in the production of asphalt for roads and highways. It can also be burned for energy.

Oil filters are shredded, heated to a molten state and the metals re-used as material for other metal products such as rebar, nails and wire.

Empty plastic oil bottles can be recycled into new containers, railway ties, plastic flowerpots, plastic pipe, guardrails, fence posts, and clothing.
